Thetford’s Cemetery will have extended opening hours for the remainder of the Summer, following requests from residents.

The London Road Cemetery in Thetford has been closing to the public at 4pm each day, but following a number of requests from the public, the cemetery will be available until 7pm at night, following a decision by Councillors.

Councillor Terry Jermy, Chair of the Amenities Committee which includes responsibility for the cemetery said; “I am very pleased that we’ve been able to come to an arrangement that will allow people to visit loved ones and access the cemetery until later in the evening for the remainder of the summer. This is particularly important for people that work and have other commitments during the week”.

Under the new arrangement the London Road entrance to the cemetery will continue to be locked at 4pm, Monday to Sunday but from Monday to Thursday the pedestrian gate at the Fulmerston Road entrance will not. This will enable people to access the cemetery later in the afternoon / evening for the remainder of the summer. The expectation is that people will vacate the cemetery by 7pm.

The arrangements for Friday through to Sunday remain unchanged with both gates being locked at 4pm. The new arrangement will run until the end of September and then be reviewed by Councillors. Members of the public are encouraged to let the Council know how the pilot is working and whether they would like to see it repeated next summer.

For more information about the new arrangements, please contact Thetford Town Council on 01842 754247.
