Allotments

Thetford Town Council has over 200 allotments on sites in: Bury Road, British Rail, Icknield Way, London Road, Mundford Road & Magdalen Street. There are waiting lists in place for all of these sites. Allotment holders must be residents of Thetford. The standard size for a new allotment is a 1/2 plot allocation at 125 sq metres.. But our old plot sizes do vary.

Refundable Deposits

The Council requests a £50 deposit which will be refunded to you when you give up your tenancy if the allotment is left in a satisfactory condition. This has been introduced due to some allotment holders vacating their plots in poor condition and it has cost the Council to clear them.

A £10 deposit is required for a water tap key.

Plot Allocations

Due to the present interest in obtaining an allotment. it has now become necessary to only offer half plot sizes to applicants. However, this may resort back if the demand decreases in the future.

Avian Flu

New Legal Requirement

As part of the efforts to tackle outbreaks of avian flu, the government is introducing a new legal registration requirement for all bird keepers in the UK.
Defra have announced that all bird keepers must register their birds under the new measures to help prevent bird flu, regardless of the number of birds kept.
Owners will need to provide the following information which must be updated annually.

  • Contact details.
  • The location where the birds are kept.
  • Species of kept bird.
  • The number of birds kept and the reason for keeping them.
  • By registering their birds, keepers will ensure they receive important updates relevant to them, such as on any local avian disease outbreaks and biosecurity rules to help protect their birds.
In England, keepers are encouraged to register their birds ahead of the legal deadline, the 1st of October 2024.
Further information on registration of birds can be found on GOV.UK.
