Press Release: Thetford Town Council vote to support objection letter regarding the redevelopment plans of Thetford’s Abbey Estate.

Friday 11th October 2024

At a Planning Meeting held on Tuesday night, Thetford Town Council voted unanimously, among those present, to support a letter objecting to Housing Association Flagship’s outline plans to redevelop the town’s Abbey Estate.

The detailed letter, drafted by members of MP Terry Jermy’s staff and others, recorded a number of material objections to the plan that would see 450 of the 1,100 homes on the estate demolished and around 1,000 new homes built in their place.

All residents would lose much of their prized green spaces, and many would see their garages demolished.

Terry Land, Thetford Town Councillor for the Priory Ward, which includes the Abbey estate, said: “Many residents feel they have been overlooked in Flagship’s push to advance their proposals. I’m here to be their voice.

Since the start of the consultation, residents have faced significant worry, anxiety, and uncertainty about their future. For many, the prospect of an 18-20 year development feels like a lifetime burden. One must ask, what will an 84-year-old respond to such uncertainty and ultimately upheaval?”

The letter will be sent by the Council to the Lead Planning Officer at Breckland District Council.
