The planning application for the proposed footbridge near Nuns Bridges in Thetford has been temporarily withdrawn to address ongoing issues with the design and location. Thetford Town Council’s project consultants, The Fen Group, are working closely with the Environment Agency and Breckland Council’s Historic Building Officer to resolve these matters.

Following discussions with external bodies, it was necessary to resubmit a Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) after concerns were raised by the Environment Agency concerning flooding in the area. Additionally, the Historic Building Officer has expressed objections to the proposed location, requesting a further review to protect the visual integrity of the historic Nuns Bridges.

Thetford Town Council and their project consultants are currently scheduling a meeting with the Historic Building Officer to discuss alternative solutions and to ensure the bridge design complies with all legal and historic requirements. Once these issues are resolved, a revised planning application will be submitted.

The Council are committed to working towards a resolution for these issues, to support improving walking and cycling opportunities locally and tackling longstanding public safety issues in the area. This is a temporary pause in the process, and we will endeavour to keep the community updated as developments on the application progress.
